Back to Maritime ZERO

About

Posted 16th Sep

Maritime ZERO is our new division for zero-emission road transport, introducing battery-electric trucks (BEVs) to our fleet, supported by one of the UK’s largest privately-operated HGV charging networks. ZERO forms a major part of our wider sustainability strategy to reduce our emissions, support our customers’ decarbonisation goals, and create the cleanest, most sustainable full-load supply chain in the country.

Why ZERO ?

HGVs account for around 19% of the UK’s surface transport emissions, despite making up only a small share of vehicles on the road. With over 1,300 trucks operating nationally, and nine rail-connected terminals linking major shipping lines, retailers, and manufacturers with ports and distribution centres, Maritime is uniquely placed to address this challenge and lead the transition to a more sustainable UK supply chain.

We’ve already increased our use of rail, expanded our terminal network, and launched new rail services across the UK. Today, rail handles over 25% of our container volumes, up from just 6% in 2019. We’ve also invested in HVO fuel, improved route efficiency, and committed to cutting our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 58.8% by 2034 through the Science Based Targets initiative. We are also a lead partner in three of the four government-backed ZEHID projects. Building on this, Maritime ZERO puts us in a leading position to bring electric road transport into the mainstream, fully integrated with rail and deployed in real operational conditions where it’s commercially and operationally viable.

What's Happening Now?

Over the next 12 months, Maritime ZERO will deploy more than 50 BEVs across our network for first and final-mile journeys within our distribution and intermodal operations, serving selected contracts and regional routes where charging infrastructure is already in place. To support this, high-powered truck chargers are being installed across our network, powered by 100% renewable electricity.

A Realistic Approach

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. But through targeted investment, real-world testing, and close collaboration with manufacturers, infrastructure partners, and customers, we can make major progress in reducing road transport emissions while continuing to deliver the high levels of service expected of Maritime.
