‘Maritime is always willing to give people the chance to learn something new and progress if they show the right attitude. When I joined the business in 2011 as an HGV driver, I wanted to gain experience in different areas, and after two years on the road I was given the opportunity to train as a reach stacker operator. The in-house training gave me a really good understanding of what the role involves, from pre-use checks and safe handling through to stack alignment, trailer positioning, and working accurately under pressure in a live terminal environment. I started out covering Saturdays and holidays but soon moved onto the machines full-time. That opportunity opened up a completely new career path for me within the business, and I’m now based at Northampton Gateway as Terminal Supervisor, overseeing day-to-day operations and helping to train and mentor the next generation of machine operators at one of the UK’s newest Strategic Rail Freight Interchanges.’
