Maritime Transport is a long-established transport operator, with its origins dating back to 1974. In 1990, the Company was sold to Maritime Transport Services Ltd., the then owners of Thamesport, to help to attract shipping lines to the newly-built container port on the Isle of Grain in Kent.
In 1998, Hutchison Ports (UK) purchased Thamesport and as part of the deal they also acquired Maritime Haulage. After a number of years of ownership, Hutchison Ports (UK) carried out a business review at the beginning of 2001 and decided to sell Maritime Haulage. John Williams, who was working for Hutchison Ports (UK) at the time, made a successful bid for the Company. The acquisition was completed in 2001 and Maritime Haulage was immediately rebranded Maritime Transport (Maritime). At the time of the purchase, Maritime had a network of five depots and operated 136 trucks with 189 staff.
Since then the business has grown and we have diversified in a number of different directions.
In 2005, we launched its fleet sales business to sell tractor units coming off fleet. The business, known as ‘secondhandtrucks.co.uk’, has become the most successful reseller of used vehicles in the UK and is responsible for selling 300+ vehicles a year, throughout the UK and overseas.
In 2009, we entered the domestic distribution sector by developing flexible solutions for customers, built around the demands of the international supply chain, in response to a need for a high quality, hands-on logistics services provider.
A year later, we completed the acquisition of DHL Container Logistics, another leading, UK-based, container transport operator and a major milestone for the Company, increasing the services and capability of the business in the container sector.
Most recently, in 2014 we acquired Roadways Container Logistics (RCL) dramatically increasing our property portfolio including key strategic sites in Nursling, Manchester and Leeds. The acquistion also including the former P&O facility – Birmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal which is our second rail terminal within the UK alongside Tilbury.
Under private ownership, since 2001, we have grown to over eleven times our original size and we are now represented at all of the major deep sea container ports in the UK, as well as inland centres at Tamworth (BIFT), Leeds, Northampton, Reading, Milton Keynes, Peterborough Doncaster and Manchester. Our Head Office is based in Felixstowe.
We have a large portfolio of blue-chip container shipping lines, freight forwarders, logistics companies and retailers and have developed a reputation for delivering flexible, cost-effective intermodal solutions in a rapidly changing transport landscape.
